Proposed Project
Southcentral Alaska faces imminent shortages of local energy sources for heat and electricity. CIRI is committed to developing diverse, environmentally responsible energy sources—underground coal gasification (UCG) could serve as one piece of the solution.
CIRI is exploring a UCG project with carbon capture and sequestration to fuel a 100-megawatt combined-cycle power plant. The project would be sited on CIRI lands on the west side of Cook Inlet near natural gas fields and infrastructure. This area is remote and largely unpopulated but fewer than 10 miles from Alaska’s largest electrical generation plant. Permitting began in October 2009 to start resource assessment testing and power production could begin in early 2014.
CIRI would only begin building a UCG facility for syngas production after deliberate, thoughtful process. Our commitment to responsible development includes:
- Performing all necessary due diligence, full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process and securing all necessary permits
- Reaching agreements with world-class technology partners
- Evaluating inputs from local and national stakeholders
- Carbon capture and management
